Shel’s Credentials

I got involved with the environmental movement in 1972. I’ve been writing about environmental issues since 1974. My first book, on energy issues, was published in 1980. In 1995, I did a book on how to have more fun and spend less money while living more lightly on the earth. In 1999, I founded an organization that protected a local mountain from the threat of severe and inappropriate development, and more recently, I’ve been on an official member of my town’s planning and development committee, which has protected farmland and open space.

And I’m still actively writing and speaking on these issues. In 2009, I wrote and published an e-book called Painless Green: 111 Tips to Help the Environment, Lower Your Carbon Footprint, Cut Your Budget, and Improve Your Quality of Life-With No Negative Impact on Your Lifestyle. In 2010, my eighth full-length book, Guerrilla Marketing Goes Green: Winning Strategies to Improve Your Profits and Your Planet (co-authored with Jay Conrad Levinson), was published by John Wiley & Sons (one of the top NYC publishers). I’ve spoken at major Green and marketing events in the US and Europe, from GoGreenExpo to Communication on Top to Book Expo America.

Let me get something straight with you, right off the bat. I’m not a techie, and I’m not certified. I base my recommendations on common sense, and a long background in environmental awareness and frugality that includes Green tricks and techniques you might not have thought of. And my orientation is toward the easy things that save money and reduce your environmental footprint—not the deep-energy stuff. Sure, you can find ways to spend thousands of dollars to go Green, but I’m looking for things with a much quicker payback and a much lower cost (often free or under $10).

Rates are $175 per hour (US dollars). Here’s how it works:

· If you’re within one hour of my office in Hadley, Massachusetts, I will come to your home or workplace and not charge for travel. There’s a one-hour minimum charge for the audit. An hour should be enough or almost enough to do a normal-sized home or storefront.

· If you’re farther away, we can either work via remote camera via Skype or other Web technology (1-hour minimum), or I can visit in person (which is likely to be more comprehensive).

· If I’m visiting in-person, the minimum charge is $600 plus travel expenses for locations within 3 hours of me (all of Massachusetts and Connecticut, most of Vermont, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire, parts of New York) and $1000 plus travel expenses for locations farther away.

· To make this more affordable, you may add one extra location nearby in the same visit, and share the cost with the other organization, both counting together toward the minimum billing, and incurring only one set of travel expenses.
